To introduce myself, I’m Boston food writer Genevieve Rajewski: meat correspondent of the wicked tasty gang…and also probably the most conflicted.
The problem is that I’m an animal lover who’s feeling squeamish with dining on meat from our country's inhumane and increasingly unsafe industrial farm system. And although I contemplate becoming a vegetarian, my husband, Nate (the cook in our family, who's pictured behind a stack of his famous ribs, above), has made it pretty clear that, while he’s willing to eat a lot more veggies, he’s never going all the way.
Fortunately, Nate is willing to let me introduce more plants into our diet. And, just as important, he's up for making an effort to try only cooking meat that has been raised in a manner we can live with.
And just a month or two ago, everything seemed to click into place.Edible Boston magazine ran a great story on Hardwick’s Chestnut Farm, which I had not heard of. A few days later, April and Cynthia joked that they needed a food writer with a meat share to round out their new CSA-focused blog.
I am excited for the opportunity to buy local from a respected farm where the animals enjoy a good quality of life; to try to reduce our meat consumption each month to the 10lbs we have signed up for; and to document and share the experience.
Nate, an adventurous type, welcomes the challenge of being forced to cook with whatever shows up in our rented red CSA cooler.
Our first cooler is a month away. Until then, I plan to undertake a household meat-consumption survey and also share some other tasty adventures.
